Re-Thinking the Architecture of Hellenic Power

Hellenism laid the intellectual foundations of Western civilization but as Greeks we did not inherit the permanent entitlement to influence. The demographic and cultural decline of Hellenism will not be reversed by unloading the Omogéneia onto a runway in Athens.

Hellenic Civilization must once again produce the thinkers, institutions, enterprises, and leaders through which civilization advances. Our civilization will survive by recapturing the capacity to shape what comes next.

Hellenism's future depends on the strength of the many centers in which Hellenic life already exists. Chicago, New York, Melbourne and Athens must become interconnected centers of Hellenic ambition.

The Institute is a Greek American Incubator that exists to transform this dispersed potential into organized capacity. Bringing together individuals from business, scholarship, the arts, and civic life, the Institute identifies talent, develops ideas, connects institutions, and advances projects capable of producing a consequential civilizational force.

Diaspora institutions must evolve from preserving Hellenic identity to producing Hellenic Capacity.

The Hellenic Diaspora is influential and wealthy.

It is not primarily concerned with what is happening in Greece.

Hellenic institutions must stop being primarily built around preserving our cultural and ethnic heritage. Modern Hellenic institutions must be built around making Hellenism a competitive advantage.

Hyphenated Americans demand institutions that can organize the extraordinary human, intellectual, and financial capital of the Diaspora toward productive capacity.

Our schools must become the best schools. Our thinkers must become the most provocative. Our projects the most ambitious. Our culture must once again produce world-acclaimed art.

The Institute’s goal is to create positive-sum institutions. For the host country to gain from the talent it develops. For Greece to gain from the knowledge and capital it connects to. And for the diaspora to gain influence and status in both worlds.

Fragmentation
Hellenism has no shortage of organizations but does not transfer organizational knowledge, infrastructure, or institutional capacity to the next generation.
Assimilation
Institutions helped the previous generation prosper but lack the mechanisms for bringing their educated, wealthy, professional and influential inheritors back into Organized Hellenism.
Institutional decay
Hellenic identity has not disappeared. Participation has declined because institutions have failed to evolve to the new expectations, capabilities, and lives of Diaspora Hellenes.
Disconnected capital
Organized Hellenism mobilizes donors and business leaders, but too often leaves its scholars, scientists, artists, professionals, technologists, and young talent on the outside.
Outdated architecture
As the diaspora grew wealthy, its institutions remained oriented toward supporting Greece and new immigrants rather than building productive capacity in the communities the diaspora now calls home.

The model

  1. Experiment

    The Institute pilots an innovation.

  2. Prove

Results demonstrate that it creates value.

  3. Open

Tools, knowledge, and infrastructure are made available.

  4. Adopt

Independent institutions adopt and adapt the model.

  5. Improve

Institutions compete by making the model better.

  6. Spread

Successful models diffuse across the community.

  7. Compound

    Hellenic capacity accumulates across institutions.

Greek-American philanthropic, affinity, religious, and civic institutions compete for two scarce resources: people’s time and donors’ money. Because neither is unlimited, participation and funding must be efficiently allocated to maximize their value. Healthy competition can encourage institutions to become more responsive, effective, and valuable to the communities they serve.

The Institute can help create this environment by developing stronger programs, modern practices, new technologies, and new standards for community engagement. When an experiment proves successful, the Institute can open the tools, knowledge, data, and infrastructure behind it so that other institutions can adopt, adapt, and improve upon the model.

The goal is not to absorb, replace, or weaken existing institutions. It is to create an ecosystem in which they are encouraged and given the capacity to improve. Organizations that offer better programming, clearer missions, stronger leadership, and more meaningful opportunities for participation should earn greater support.

Work on what you care about.

The Institute is not a committee that votes projects in or out. It is a network of people building in parallel. Members introduce ideas, refine them with others, assemble teams, and contribute where their interests and expertise are useful.

No one is expected to work on everything.Every project is expected to move.

How you participate

  • IntroduceBring forward a problem, idea, or experiment worth pursuing.
  • RefineDiscuss it with people whose knowledge can make it stronger.
  • BuildLead the project, join its team, or contribute a specific skill.
  • ContributeOffer research, introductions, criticism, capital, or expertise where useful.
  • Move between projectsEngage deeply when you can. Step back when you cannot. Return when you have something to contribute.

How projects move

  6. Next iteration

Projects move forward in parallel. The Institute does not require the whole institution to agree before someone begins building.
